I consider myself as a well informed person in the areas of current events. I take a significant portion of my day in reading, hearing, and watching news. I began this news craze since I launched by website DS NETS, a news abstract website. Back in around 2003 I wanted to have a website where I can write something everyday and publish it on the web for everyone to see. The "blog revolution" was slowly picking up in steam by that time, but I wanted to have a website that had some type of formality in it. I wanted to write something that really mattered with the world. As I brainstormed I had a homework assignment from my biology teacher where I had to read a science article and write a short abstract about the content. After finishing the assignment I realized how helpful it was to remember the article just by writing an abstract about it. From there I began my little journey in writing news abstracts. It became a daily chore as I went to major news websites for the latest stories and writing short news abstract. My writing definitely improved over the years, but I realized that my knowledge of the world was very comprehensive, almost reaching the levels of my high school teachers. I had a far more palpable experience with current events compared to any of my friends, and my comprehensive knowledge of the news came in handy whenever I was debating with someone on an issue. I don't recommend anyone to start indulging in news websites and reading every article available every day. From my experience I just want people to be more informed with the world and try to understand that many of the developing issues are not just two-dimensional fragments of information but a complex web of developing issues and events. The unusual cold weather in California could affect high orange prices in months ahead. The falling value of the dollar against the Euro will help the U.S. tourist industry next week. I think it is critical that people have a greater understanding with the relations between news events so that they can be informed and make the right choices when the opportunity comes. So, grab a newspaper; watch your local news; browse news websites. Just be informed.

Announcements
I do a lot of reading for school and for personal enjoyment. In the coming weeks, I will feature some of the books that I am currently reading as I concentrate on writing less "Internet-related" topics. |
